Air Treatment FAQs

Untreated compressed air often contains moisture, oil, dust, and other impurities. These contaminants can cause:

  • Wear, seizure, and seal failure in pneumatic components (e.g., cylinders, valves), shortening their lifespan.
  • Clogging or corrosion of pipelines.
  • Impact on product quality (e.g., in spraying, food processing industries).
  • Reduced system efficiency and increased energy consumption.

Air source treatment units effectively remove these harmful substances, providing clean, dry, and pressure-regulated compressed air, thereby protecting equipment, improving production efficiency, and enhancing product quality.

The choice of filter precision depends on the air purity requirements of the downstream pneumatic equipment:

  • General pneumatic tools and equipment: Typically, 5μm or 25μm filters are suitable.
  • Precision pneumatic components (e.g., precision regulators, positioners): Filters of 1μm or higher precision are recommended.
  • High-purity applications (e.g., instrument air, spraying, food & pharma): May require 0.01μm precision filters or even sterile filters.

It’s common to use a staged filtration approach: a coarse filter in the main line, followed by precision filters closer to the point of use as needed, for optimal effectiveness and economy.

Not all pneumatic systems require lubricators. The need depends on the lubrication requirements of the downstream pneumatic components:

  • Components requiring lubrication: Some traditionally designed or high-speed, heavy-load cylinders, motors, etc., may need oil mist lubrication to reduce wear and extend life.
  • Lubrication-free components: Many modern pneumatic components use self-lubricating materials or special coatings and are designed to be lubrication-free or grease-lubricated. Using a lubricator in such cases can wash away existing lubrication and be detrimental.
  • Specific industries: Industries like food, pharmaceuticals, and electronics often prohibit oil mist lubrication to avoid contamination.

Always check the technical specifications of your pneumatic components to determine if oil mist lubrication is needed and the appropriate type of oil.

The typical installation order for standard air treatment units (like FRLs), in the direction of airflow, is:

  1. Air Filter: First, to remove solid particles and condensed water.
  2. Pressure Regulator: Next, to regulate and stabilize pressure.
  3. Lubricator: Last (if required), to add oil mist for lubrication.

Ensure installation follows the airflow direction indicated by arrows on the product. In some applications, the order or components might vary, e.g., a precision filter placed after the regulator.

Regular maintenance is crucial for optimal performance:

  • Filters: Regularly drain accumulated water and contaminants from the filter bowl (for manual drain types) or check if automatic drains are functioning. Clean or replace filter elements based on pressure drop or usage time.
  • Regulators: Monitor output pressure stability. Inspect or adjust if abnormalities occur.
  • Lubricators: Check oil levels in the bowl and refill with appropriate lubricating oil as needed. Adjust the oil drip rate to meet equipment requirements.
  • Overall Inspection: Check for secure connections and any air leaks.

Refer to the specific product’s user manual for detailed maintenance schedules and procedures.
