Comprendre Filter-Regulator Conception

Régulateurs de filtre pneumatiques des séries AFR et BFR

Two-in-One Air Preparation

A filter-regulator (FR) unit efficiently combines an air filter and a pressure regulator into a single, compact housing. Compressed air first enters the filter section, where solid particles and condensed moisture are removed. The cleaned air then passes to the regulator section, where its pressure is precisely controlled and stabilized to the desired setpoint before being delivered to downstream pneumatic devices.

Composants clés :

  • Section du filtre : Contains a filter element (various micron ratings), a deflector plate for cyclonic separation, a condensate bowl, and a drain (manual, semi-auto, or automatic).
  • Regulator Section: Features a diaphragm or piston, adjusting spring, pressure setting knob, and often an integrated pressure gauge port.
  • Integrated Body: A common housing for both functions, with clear inlet and outlet ports.

Filter-Regulator Installation et maintenance

Bonnes pratiques d'installation :

  • Install the unit as close as possible to the point of use to minimize pressure drop and ensure clean air delivery.
  • Veillez à ce que le flux d'air soit orienté correctement, comme indiqué par les flèches sur le corps de l'appareil.
  • Mount vertically with the filter bowl down for proper condensate drainage.
  • Allow sufficient space below the bowl for draining and filter element replacement.
  • Utiliser des raccords appropriés et un produit d'étanchéité pour filets afin d'assurer des connexions sûres et sans fuite.
  • If a pressure gauge is separate, install it on the designated gauge port.

Entretien courant :

  • Filter Bowl: Regularly drain accumulated condensate. Clean the bowl if it becomes dirty.
  • Filter Element: Replace when the pressure drop across the unit becomes excessive or according to the manufacturer’s recommended schedule.
  • Pressure Adjustment: Check and adjust the regulated pressure as needed for the application. Ensure the adjustment knob locks securely if it has a locking feature.
  • General Inspection: Periodically check for air leaks, damage to the bowl or body, and ensure all connections are tight.

Always de-pressurize the system before performing any maintenance on filter-regulator units.

Filtres-régulateurs FAQ

A filter-regulator (FR) unit combines two essential air preparation functions into a single, compact device:

  • Filtering: It removes solid contaminants (dust, rust, pipe scale) and condensed water from the compressed air supply.
  • Regulating: It reduces and controls the air pressure to a stable, desired downstream level, protecting equipment from overpressure and ensuring consistent operation.

Essentially, it provides clean, pressure-controlled air to pneumatic components.

Most filter-regulators have an adjustment knob on top. To set the pressure:

  • Ensure the upstream air supply is on.
  • If there’s a locking mechanism on the knob (e.g., pull-up to unlock, push-down to lock), unlock it.
  • Slowly turn the knob while observing a pressure gauge connected to the outlet port (or an integrated gauge if present).
  • Turn clockwise to increase pressure, counter-clockwise to decrease.
  • Adjust until the desired downstream pressure is reached. It’s often best to adjust upwards to the setpoint.
  • Once set, lock the adjustment knob if it has a locking feature to prevent accidental changes.

Always set the pressure to the minimum required for the application to save energy and reduce wear on components.

Standard filter-regulators typically provide particulate filtration. The most common filtration ratings for general-purpose FR units are:

  • 40 micron (µm): Removes larger solid particles. Suitable for general pneumatic tools and less sensitive components.
  • 5 micron (µm): Offers finer filtration, removing smaller solid particles. Recommended for most standard pneumatic valves and cylinders.

These units also remove bulk liquid water through cyclonic separation and baffles. However, they do not typically remove oil aerosols or very fine sub-micron particles. For oil removal or higher purity air, separate coalescing filters or activated carbon filters would be needed in addition to or in place of the standard filter section.

Yes, a filter-regulator (FR unit) only provides filtration and pressure regulation. It does not add lubrication to the air stream.

If your downstream pneumatic components (like certain air tools or older cylinder designs) require oil mist lubrication for proper operation and longevity, you would need to add a separate lubricator unit downstream of the filter-regulator, or use a combined Filter-Regulator-Lubricator (FRL) unit.

Using an FR unit alone in a system that requires lubrication will result in those components running dry, leading to increased wear and premature failure.

This refers to how the regulator handles excess downstream pressure:

  • Régulateur de décharge : If the downstream pressure exceeds the set pressure (e.g., due to external forces on a cylinder or temperature changes), a relieving regulator will automatically vent the excess pressure to the atmosphere through a small relief port in the regulator body, bringing the downstream pressure back to the setpoint. This is the most common type for general pneumatic applications.
  • Régulateur non libérateur : Does not have an internal mechanism to vent excess downstream pressure. If downstream pressure rises above the setpoint, it will remain trapped until it’s consumed by the application or manually vented. Non-relieving regulators are used in applications where venting to the atmosphere is undesirable (e.g., with specific gases other than air, or to prevent contaminants from entering the vent port).

Most general-purpose filter-regulators will feature a relieving-type regulator.
